The Philmont Leadership Challenge (PLC) is an exciting
new program where adult leaders live in the Philmont
Backcountry and practice the leadership skills learned in Wood Badge for the 21st Century. You will expand upon these team building and ethical decision making
skills, and see your Wood Badge skills come to life during a series of challenging activities. PLC uses elements
of the Philmont Ranger Training as well as advanced Search and Rescue skills to
teach leadership, teamwork and the lessons of selfless service. PLC offers an unforgettable backcountry wilderness experience where you live leadership and teamwork, using the core elements of Wood Badge of the 21st Century to make your leadership skills intuitive. |

The Philmont leadership is committed to making PLC a very special experience. This course will change you, and give you the skills you need to change the lives of others. You will live in a team setting at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp and use your leadership skills to resolve exciting and challenging backcountry situations. Your campsite will be provided with Philmont canvas tents that are on platforms. We follow Leave No Trace guidelines throughout the week, culminating in an unforgettable backcountry backpacking experience. The week will conclude with a closing challenge for each participant to build upon the legacy of Waite Phillips, the benefactor of the Philmont Scout Ranch. |

You will take home the skill, ability, and motivation to be a dynamic and effective leader gained through advanced,
practical applications of Wood Badge and NYLT skills. You will also learn Innovative techniques to deliver these skills to untis and council staffs. You will have exposure to nationwide resources including new ideas and contacts that can only be gained through Philmont’s
unique environment. You will develop a Personal written commitment to apply fresh skills and ideas to units, districts
and councils. Most of all, you will learn Life skills for now and the future. |

| Wood Badge for the 21st Century introduces participants to the Leadership concepts and skills that enable them to be more effective leaders. These skills are delivered through a lecture classroom environment and experienced through a short outdoor camping experience. PLC carries this beyond Wood Badge by providing a extended experience in a high adventure backcountry environment. PLC also brings together the best of Wood Badge and NYLT skills so that participants have the chance to align and internalize these skills for lifelong learning. |

Participants must have attended or staffed the Wood Badge for the 21st Century course as well as meet the Philmont Scout Ranch Level A Physical requirements. Candidates who have staffed key roles of NYLT or NAYLE course and were beaded in the "Old Wood Badge" also qualify. |

| PLC is an Advanced Leadership Experience in the backcountry where participants have a chance to live what they learned at Wood Badge. Wood Badge focused on introducing Leadership Skills with a short outdoor experience. The Philmont Leadership Challenge provides a series of challenging outdoor activities which teach new "hard skills" (such as Wilderness First Aid and Search and Rescue Techniques) but which require your team to work together to accomplish the activity tasks, using the leadership skills taught in Wood Badge. The powerful concept of Servant Leadership is explained and demonstrated throughout the course. |

| You must have attended Wood Badge for the 21st Century or staffed a course of Wood Badge for the 21st Century or staffed a NYLT or NAYLE course after earning your beads through the "Old Wood Badge" course. You must also meet the Philmont Physical Requirements. |

| There is moderate Physical Activity (Hiking, Camping, Backpacking) in the backcountry. As such, you must meet the same physical requirements as for a trek and must be able to pass a Philmont Trek "Level A" Physical, including the height/weight requirements. This is for your safety! A Philmont Health and Medical Form must be submitted at check in. |

| There is NO indoor classroom time. Skill sessions are conducted in the Field and Leadership reflections are at the scenario and/or team sites. |

| The Leadership skills are based on the skills you learned in your Council Wood Badge for the 21st Century.. The outdoor skills are based on elements of Philmont Ranger Training. |

| NO! The Philmont Leadership Challenge's schedule is not like any other PTC week long course. The course requires your attendance at the course 24 hours a day for the entire length of the course, Sept 19 - 25. Think of it like your Wood Badge experience. When you were at the course you were expected to be available to work with your team the entire time you were "on the hill". If you have family member(s) come with you to attend other course offerings or the Silverado program at the Philmont Training Center, they will need to know that you will not be available until the end of the PLC course. |

| A full equipment list will be provided when you register but plan on a backpack, sleeping bag and pad, basic camping equipment and cold weather clothing for a week. You will receive a personal equipment list in your confirmation packet. |

| The cost is $470. There is currently one session as follows: September 19 - 25, 2010. Registrations received after August 1 incur a $50 late fee. If you plan to arrive the day prior to the course start, there is a $15 early arrival fee which includes a tent and breakfast the next morning. |
