Main sectors of education
Schools throughout Australia belong in one of three main sectors:
Government schools provide an educational opportunity for all students in the local area at a minimal cost (usually just voluntary contributions). Catholic schools generally admit students of Catholic faith and are governed by the state or territory’s Catholic education department. Independent schools are governed by their own individual board and may have a religious affiliation or abide by a particular teaching philosophy. These schools typically have much higher fees. For many people, choosing a sector is the first and most fundamental step towards choosing a school.

US’s High School education system finishes around the age of 17 at “Grade 12”. Their Universities are usually a 4 year course, but with more flexibility because you decide each class yourself. However, you are also required to take General Classes mostly within the first couple years, but they are no different to Senior classes in High school.

To obtain a Mature Student High School Diploma under the Grade 9 to Grade 12 (Senior 1 to Senior 4) Mature Student Graduation Requirements (2003), a student

  1. must be 19 years of age or over at the time of enrolment in school division/district or ALC programming directed at completing the Mature Student Graduation Requirements, or reach the age of 19 before completion of the course(s) in which he or she is enrolled
  2. must have been out of school six months or more, and out of school long enough for the class, of which he or she was last a member, to have graduated from Senior Years; and
  3. has not obtained a high school diploma.
